Wildwood Creek is a dual time period novel, told from the
point of view of two women; present day Allie Kirkland and Bonnie Rose
from 1861.
After a traumatizing past, Bonnie Rose is starting a fresh new life for her and her little sister Maggie Mae. She has taken a job of a school teacher in a remote town called Wildwood, under the authority of a wealthy and powerful man named Delavan. When bad things begin to happen to the townfolk, Bonnie Rose is blamed and stories (even a folk song) is told for generations to come.
In present day, Allie Kirkland dreams to follow in her late father's footsteps as a producer. She signs up for an internship as a production assistant for a historical reinactment, set in the very town that Bonnie Rose once worked, lived and then disappeared. However the creator of the reality television show has other plans for Allie, and casts her in the lead role as Bonnie Rose.
This is the 4th book in the Moses Lake series by Lisa Wingate, which I got as a free download off Amazon. Fortunately for me the series is based on the location and not a continuing story, so Wildwood can be read as a stand alone book.
I was drawn to this book, not only because I enjoy historical fiction, but because of the historical reinactment idea. I found the process of how the cast who would step back into the life of the former Wildwood residents, were trained for their roles to be quite interesting. This past year I have read several Christian fiction novels, but I think Wildwood Creek has been the darkest I've read to date. This was due in part to the mystery surrounding the town and what really happened back in 1861, also the terrible things that happened to Bonnie Rose. Normally with dual time period novel's I tend to favour the historical time period more than the present day, however it was the opposite with this book. I found Allie's point of view to be more interesting.
Although I did enjoy this book, I am undecided if I will go back and read the rest of the series. I give Wildwood Creek by Lisa Wingate 3.5 stars.
